Nasal endoscopy offers our ENT surgeon a reliable, visual view of the sinus drainage passages. A rigid endoscope is placed to view the nasal cavity. The procedure is used to visualize signs of nasal obstruction as well as detect nasal polyps hidden from routine nasal examination. During the endoscopic exam, the physician also looks for pus as well as polyp formation and other causes for recurrent sinusitis.

Physicians trained in the medical and surgical management and treatment of patients with diseases, disorders of the ear, nose, throat (ENT), and related structures of the head and neck.

Our physicians are specialists. In order to perform a complete ENT exam, the use of a nasal scope or a flexible scope is often necessary. Our scopes have a microscope in them which allows our physicians to visualize the nose and throat and properly diagnose symptoms.

Our doctors recommend using ear plugs when patients are in “dirty” water, (ex. ocean, lake, river). They can go without the use of earplugs in “clean” water (ex. when bathing and in pool water). We have earplugs available for purchase at our office.

No, our doctors use a procedure known as electrocautery to perform tonsillectomies. They are performed in a surgical setting.

Not seeking treatment for sinusitis will result in unnecessary pain and discomfort.

The surgery enlarges the natural opening to the sinuses allowing mucus to drain properly. ENT surgeons have found sinus surgery to be highly effective in restoring normal function to the sinuses. The procedure removes areas of obstruction, resulting in the normal flow of mucus.

The basic endoscopic surgical procedure is performed under general anesthesia in an outpatient surgical setting. It is a safe, effective surgical option. The patient returns to normal activities within 5-7 days.

Our bodies naturally produce mucus. It acts as a lubricant in the nasal passages. When inflammation causes the sinus opening to narrow, the movement of mucus is then blocked. It often then becomes infected. If antibiotics are not effective in relieving symptoms, sinus surgery may be recommended.

To reduce congestion, the physician may prescribe nasal sprays, nose drops, or oral decongestants. Antibiotics will be prescribed for any bacterial infection found in the sinuses (antibiotics are not effective against a viral infection). Antihistamines may be recommended for the treatment of allergies. If these measures do not improve symptoms, surgery may then be recommended.

An endoscope is a rigid, surgical instrument that is used for the examination of the nasal and sinus passages. It is lighted and has telescopes inside that allow the physician to better visualize the sinus passages.

To obtain the best treatment option, our physicians will go over your history and symptoms with you. Then, a thorough examination will be performed. This will include the use of a piece of surgical equipment known as a nasal endoscope or “scope.” It is a rigid piece of equipment with a lighted end and telescopes inside of it. This is used to better visualize the sinus passages and give our physicians a better understanding of your sinus symptoms. CT’s may also be recommended.

Sinusitis is typically treated with antibiotics, nasal sprays, and/or steroid therapy. If these measures do not improve symptoms over a period of time, surgical intervention may be recommended at that time.

Sinus symptoms can include facial pain, tenderness and swelling around the eyes, bridge of nose, and/or forehead, chronic nasal congestion, sinus pressure, difficulty breathing through the nose, especially at night, loss of taste or smell, discolored mucus from the nose, tooth pain, bad breath, nasal polyps, and snoring.

Sinusitis is an inflammation of the membrane lining of the sinus cavity. Acute sinusitis is a short-term condition that responds well to antibiotics and decongestants; chronic sinusitis is characterized by at least four recurrences of acute sinusitis that does not respond well to medical therapy. Treatment options include continued medical therapy and/or surgical options.
